How to run Windows Steam games on an Apple Silicon Mac

Install the Windows version of Steam inside Wine, which translates Windows calls to macOS, with Rosetta 2 handling the x86 code and a layer such as DXMT turning DirectX into Metal. Vermut does that setup for you for free: it downloads Wine, creates a separate bottle for Steam and launches the official Steam client. Most DirectX 9 to 11 games run; games with kernel-level anti-cheat don't.

Why the Mac version of Steam isn't enough

Steam for macOS only shows games that have a Mac build. Most of a typical Steam library is Windows-only, and Apple Silicon Macs can't run Boot Camp, so the Windows build has to run some other way.

On an Apple Silicon Mac three things work together: Rosetta 2 runs the x86-64 code, Wine provides the Windows APIs, and a graphics layer turns DirectX into Metal. None of this is emulating a whole PC, which is why it can be fast, and also why some games fail.

Set up Windows Steam with Vermut

  1. Check your Mac

You need an Apple Silicon Mac (M1 or later) with macOS 14 Sonoma or later and several GB of free space for Wine, Steam and your games. Intel Macs aren't supported.

  2. Download and open Vermut

Get the DMG from GitHub and drag Vermut to Applications. The app isn't notarized yet, so macOS asks you to allow it once: follow the first-launch guide.

  3. Let Vermut prepare Wine

On first launch Vermut offers to install Rosetta 2 if it's missing and downloads its Wine 11 engine, about 1 to 2 GB.

  4. Install Steam

Click Install next to Steam. Vermut downloads the official Steam installer into its own bottle and finishes Steam's first update. Then sign in with your normal Steam account.

  5. Install and play

Install games from the Steam client as you would on a PC. Installed games appear in Vermut's Library.

  6. If a game misbehaves, change the graphics backend

DXMT is the default for DirectX 10 and 11. You can switch the bottle to DXVK, WineD3D, or D3DMetal if you installed Apple's Game Porting Toolkit. The v1.2 beta adds settings for a single game.

What works on Apple Silicon, and what doesn't

  • Usually runs: DirectX 9, 10 and 11 games, and indie or older titles, which are often the easiest.
  • Needs extra setup: DirectX 12 games need Apple's D3DMetal from the Game Porting Toolkit, which you download from Apple. Games with their own launcher may need trial and error.
  • Won't run: Games with kernel-level anti-cheat, such as Valorant, Fortnite and Call of Duty, won't run through Wine, and no Mac tool can change that. Check Are We Anti-Cheat Yet? before you buy.
  • Performance depends on the game and on your chip. Translation has a cost, so expect lower frame rates than a Windows PC with a similar GPU, and some stutter while shaders compile the first time.

Search the CodeWeavers compatibility database for a game before buying it: CrossOver is built on the same Wine, so its reports are a good guide.

Questions

  • Can an M1 Mac run Windows Steam games?

Yes. Any Apple Silicon Mac with macOS 14 Sonoma or later can run the Windows Steam client through Wine. Older or lighter games run best on base chips; demanding games need more GPU and memory.

  • Do I need a Windows licence?

No. Wine isn't Windows, so you don't install or buy Windows. You only need a Windows licence for a virtual machine such as Parallels.

  • Will my Steam saves and achievements work?

Yes. You sign in with your own account in the official Steam client, so cloud saves, achievements and your library work as on a PC.

  • Do DirectX 12 games work?

Some do, through Apple's D3DMetal. Apple's licence doesn't allow apps to bundle it, so you download the Game Porting Toolkit from Apple yourself and Vermut detects it.

  • Is it safe for my Steam account?

Vermut runs the official Steam client and never sees your password. Games whose anti-cheat refuses Wine won't start or won't connect online.
